Simple Photography Reflector Techniques!    by Dan Eitreim

The photography reflector is an extremely helpful close to obligatory photography device. Here’s a handful tips on ways to use photography reflectors to give your photos a sophisticated professional appearance. It is really all regarding the shadows!

First…What is a reflector.

It may be ANY item useful to return illumination onto our subject. It could be a mirror, a pro made rip-stop nylon reflector, a piece of white paper or poster board, a colorless wall as well as the side of a white truck!

Everything that will kick light on our model is functional.

Or, by employing a black reflector, we can subdue the light and build up the shadow side of our subject!

Be cautious of using colored reflective resources though, because they could mirror a colored cast on our subject that can ruin the photograph.

Why make use of a reflector?

To get an extremely polished and expert looking shot, we have to possess both highlights AND shadows. It’s the shadows that define form and make our model look 3D.

For getting both a lit side along with a shadowed side, our key light – may be an on camera flash, a studio strobe or only the sun…needs to be positioned on the side of our subject. This will create a shadowed side – but the shadow will almost always be too intense. We need to view details of the face within the shadows! Not just pure black.

Enter the “fill light”. It is usually termed this because it “fills in” the shadow with light so we are able to make out detail.

But, most of us do not have the funds to buy an additional studio strobe (they could cost many hundreds of dollars.) Consequently, we swap the studio strobe with a reflector!

For only a few dollars, a reflector is able to work as a second light source and “fill” in the shadows for us! Giving us that polished, 3d picture we’ve been after – for almost no expense!

There are other lights that may be substituted by reflectors as well! The hair light, the “kicker” the background separation light and so on.

With the thoughtful utilization of photography reflectors we could have a very proficient 5 light set-up for next to no cost! It’s simple! Begin using a photography reflector today and you will immediately observe an improvement in your portraits!
